A New Jersey pharmacy executive was murdered in his home after a robber who witnessed him win $10,000 at a Philadelphia casino trailed him 50 miles to his home to rob him.
Sree Aravapalli, 54, was shot multiple times inside his Plainsboro, New Jersey home in the early hours of Tuesday during an attempted robbery after he was spotted winning $10,000 at Parx Casino just outside of Philadelphia and cashing in the windfall.
Police say 27-year-old Jekai Reid-John, who did not know Aravapalli, then followed him for 50 miles to his residence in a quiet, upper class New Jersey suburb in the dead of night. When the pharmaceutical executive arrived home shortly after 3 am, the 27-year-old was close behind and broke in through a back sliding door.
Aravapalli was still downstairs when Reid-John shot and killed him while his daughter and wife were asleep upstairs, police said. Source

Vatican cancels live broadcast of Biden greeting pope
ROME (AP) — The Vatican on Thursday abruptly canceled the planned live broadcast of U.S. President Joe Biden meeting Pope Francis, the latest restriction to media coverage of the Holy See.
The Vatican press office provided no explanation for why the live broadcast of Biden’s visit had been trimmed to cover just the arrival of the president’s motorcade in the courtyard of the Apostolic Palace, where a Vatican monsignor will greet him.
Cancelled was any live coverage of Biden actually greeting Francis in the palace Throne Room, as well as the live footage of the two men sitting down to begin their private talks in Francis’ library, at which time the cameras normally would have stopped running.
The Vatican said it would provide edited footage of the encounter after the fact to accredited media.
Biden, the second Catholic U.S. president, has met Francis three previous times, but this will be his first as president.The audience was being closely monitored since U.S. bishops are due to meet in a few weeks for their annual fall convention, with one of the agenda items inspired by conservatives who contend that Biden’s support for abortion rights should disqualify him from receiving Communion.
Though any document that emerges from the bishops’ conference is not expected to mention Biden by name, it’s possible there could be a clear message of rebuke.
Francis has strongly upheld the church’s opposition to abortion, calling it “murder.” But he has said bishops should be pastors, not politicians.
The Vatican has provided live television coverage for the visits of major heads of state for years and had scheduled such coverage Friday for Biden and before him, for South Korean President Moon Jae-in, who is also in Rome for a Group of 20 meeting this weekend.
Live broadcasts are particularly important because the Vatican hasn’t allowed independent photographers and journalists into papal audiences since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Vatican has continued to cite the pandemic as a reason to deny external media access to the beginnings and ends of papal audiences with visiting leaders, even though they are allowed into other papal events.
It is during those moments in the pope’s library that reporters can view the gifts that are exchanged, watch as the formal photograph is taken and overhear remarks as the leaders arrive and depart to get a sense of how the pope and his guest have gotten along. Only the pope’s official photographer and Vatican video journalists are now allowed in.
The Vatican correspondents’ association has protested the cancellation of such pool access and several media outlets, including The Associated Press, formally complained about Thursday’s cut of the live Biden-pope broadcast and asked for an explanation. Source

Sudan’s Military Seizes Power and Fires on Protesters
Sudan’s military seized power on Monday, detaining the prime minister and other civilian political leaders in an unfolding coup that appeared to deal a sweeping blow to hopes for a democratic transition in one of Africa’s largest countries.
Lt. Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the military chief, announced at a news conference that he was dissolving the country’s joint civilian-military government and imposing a state of emergency. Even so, he vowed to press ahead with elections planned for July 2023.
There had been growing signs for weeks that the military, unwilling to fully share power and intent on protecting its own interests, was plotting a takeover.
General al-Burhan, justifying the military’s actions, pointed to squabbling between rival civilian political factions in Sudan. “What the country is going through represents a threat,” he said.
As news of the coup spread, thousands of protesters flooded into the streets of the capital, Khartoum, and television broadcast images of people burning tires as plumes of smoke spiraled into the sky.
But soon after that, the information ministry announced that internet connections had been cut, making it difficult to know what was actually happening inside the country.
There were reports that soldiers gunned down protesters gathered outside the army headquarters in Khartoum. A doctors’ group said that at least three had been killed and more than 80 wounded.
It was not clear where Mr. Hamdok was taken, or what condition he was in. Asked if the U.S. government knew his location, Ned Price, a State Department spokesman, said, “We have not been in touch with the prime minister.”

U.K. supermarkets are using cardboard cutouts of fruit, vegetables and other groceries to fill gaps on shelves because supply problems combined with a shift towards smaller product ranges mean many stores are now too big.
Tesco has begun using pictures of asparagus, carrots, oranges and grapes in its fresh produce aisles, prompting ridicule on social media.
“Mmmm, delicious photos of asparagus,” one commenter wrote on Twitter. Another mocked an oversized picture of the vegetable piled up: “I love that asparagus grows to this size in the UK. It’s our climate, I’m sure.” Shoppers have spotted fake carrots in Fakenham, cardboard asparagus in London, pictures of oranges and grapes in Milton Keynes, and 2D washing liquid bottles in Cambridge. Sainsbury’s has also used outline drawings of packaging to fill shelves.
The tactic comes as shortages of HGV drivers and pickers and packers on farms and food processing plants lead to low availability of some items in supermarkets. Problems at ports, where handlers are struggling to cope with a surge in deliveries for the festive season, are also leading to shortages.
Bryan Roberts, a retail analyst at Shopfloor Insights, said he had only begun to see the cardboard cutouts of fresh produce in the past year, but said similar tactics had been in place elsewhere in supermarkets for some time. “It has become quite commonplace. It is not only because of shortages, but because a lot of the larger stores are now simply too big.”
He said the cutouts were one of an array of tactics being used to fill space, including filling meat fridges with bottles of tomato sauce or mayonnaise, spreading packs of beer out across whole aisles, and erecting large posters or other marketing material.
Tesco, which has boasted that its sales have been boosted by its ability to keep shelves stocked, said the fruit and vegetable pictures were not linked to the recent supply chain issues and had been in use for many months. Source

A pair of alcohol-impaired elementary school P.E. teachers entered the wrong Florida home, and one eventually shot a man who lived there.
Two Florida elementary school physical education teachers have been accused of entering the wrong apartment, and one of the intruders shot an actual tenant who lived there.
According to the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office, Darius Cohen and Akkua Hallback spent the night of Oct. 10 drinking in some Vero Beach bars, local media reported. Afterward, Cohen drove to an apartment complex of an area woman; Hallback waited for her inside her residence. Cohen waited outside for a few hours but eventually needed to use the bathroom, and he contacted Hallback.
Hallback went out to get Cohen, but upon returning inside, the two 26-year-old men entered the unlocked door of the wrong apartment, where a family lived. Source

A movie prop masters union has told members it was a live round and not a blank that Alec Baldwin fired at a female cinematographer on Thursday in New Mexico, killing her and wounding the movie's director in a tragic on-set accident.
Halyna Hutchins, 42, died shortly after being shot by Baldwin around 1.50pm Thursday at Bonanza Creek Ranch, near the city of Santa Fe in New Mexico, where they were filming the movie Rust. Joel Souza, 48, the film's director, was also hurt and spent several hours in hospital, but was released later the same evening.
Police have disclosed few details about the shooting, saying only that a 'projectile' was fired by a 'prop gun' and they are investigating, and the movie production insisted that only blanks were used. But a prop masters union IATSE 44 told members on Thursday night in an email that a 'live' round was fired.
DailyMail.com has also obtained a portion of the 911 call that was placed from the set. In the three-second long clip , a woman can be heard saying: 'We have two people accidentally shot.'
According to witnesses on-set, Baldwin was stunned after firing the fatal round and asked: 'Why was I handed a hot gun?'
Hutchins' grieving husband Matthew told DailyMail.com on Friday morning that he had spoken with the actor.
'I have spoken with Alec Baldwin and he is being very supportive,' he said.
It's unclear where the union got the information that the round fired by Baldwin was a live one, since none of its members were on the movie set. However it appeared to have seen the call sheet, and confirmed that the props department for the film was staffed with local New Mexican crew, not Hollywood pros. Source

The killer of Tory MP Sir David Amess planned the murderous assault more than a week in advance, security sources have told The Mail on Sunday.
As police continued to question a 25-year-old British man of Somalian descent last night, sources revealed that the attacker had booked an appointment at Sir David's constituency surgery before stabbing the politician 17 times.
The suspect was named last night as Ali Harbi Ali, the son of a former communications adviser to the prime minister of Somalia. Harbi Ali Kullane, confirmed that his son was in police custody following the stabbing and said he was 'traumatised' by the arrest.Ali may have lived in Sir David's Southend West constituency in Essex in the past, but his most recent residence is believed to be in London, where officers have been carrying out searches at three addresses.
The security services are providing assistance to Scotland Yard, which is leading the investigation. Last night, detectives were granted a warrant of further detention, allowing them to keep Ali in custody until Friday.
Police officers were yesterday standing guard outside the North London council house where Ali lives. It is in a street of £2 million three-storey townhouses where neighbours include broadcaster Giles Coren and, formerly, the late actor Roger Lloyd Pack, who played Trigger in Only Fools And Horses.
Sir David, 69, who had been an MP since 1983, met the public every fortnight and advertised the details on his parliamentary website.

Sir David was a committed constituency MP who had devoted his life to meeting local residents and trying to help with their problems.

John Lamb, a Conservative councillor who rushed to the church when he heard what had happened, said: 'He was doing a surgery in the Methodist church here to speak to local people and pick up on their problems. 'I'm told that when he went in for his surgery there were people waiting to see him, and one of them literally got a knife out and just began stabbing him.
'He was with a female member of staff from his constituency office and another female member of staff from his parliamentary office.'
Speaking outside the church, the shocked councillor said: 'It has been two hours since it happened, and they are still working on him – he hasn't been taken to hospital yet.
'He's a family man, he's got four daughters and a son.'

The White House jumped to the defense of Pete Buttigieg after a report broke that the Transportation secretary has been on paid paternity leave since mid-August, as his department comes under intense scrutiny for supply chain issues.
Federal employees are offered up to 12 weeks' paid parental leave, though Cabinet secretaries are not included in that, meaning President Biden had to sign off on the leave.
Buttigieg announced on Sept. 4 that he and his husband Chasten had adopted twins. At least four people have been killed and others injured by a man using a bow and arrows to carry out attacks in the Norwegian town of Kongsberg on Wednesday.
'We can unfortunately confirm that there are several injured and also unfortunately several killed in this episode,' local police official Oyvind Aas told a news conference.
'The man who committed this act has been arrested by the police and, according to our information, there is only one person involved.' 'The man has been apprehended ... from the information we now have, this person carried out these actions alone,' police chief Oeyvind Aas told reporters.
He declined to comment on the number of casualties but local media reported at least four people had been killed.

Its leader, Grandmaster Jay, whose real name is John Fitzgerald Johnson, retained the cocky, steel-eyed confidence that has made him a messiah to tens of thousands of Black Americans. He wore his trademark body armor and sunglasses in the summer heat and spoke grandly of self-defense, Black empowerment and the creation of a Black nation.

Michigan man arrested in suspicious vehicle outside Supreme Court building
WASHINGTON — Capitol Police arrested a Michigan man without incident Tuesday morning after a suspicious vehicle was reported outside of the U.S. Supreme Court building.
Shortly before 10 a.m. Tuesday, the agency said it was responding to a suspicious vehicle on First Street NE near the court. Police eventually closed down a number of roads in the area after failing initially to make contact with the driver. Staffers on the hill were notified around 11 a.m. that police were “preparing to disrupt a suspicious vehicle” and that a loud band might be heard, but the agency reported a short time later that the vehicle’s driver had been taken into custody safely.The driver was identified by police as Dale Paul Melvin, 55, of Kimball, Michigan.
During a press conference, Capitol Police Deputy Chief Jason Bell said Melvin had driven his SUV near the Supreme Court building and parked illegally. When officers approached, Bell said, Melvin "made a statement to the effect of, 'The time for talking is done.'" Source

Victims of Milan air crash that killed all eight on board including Romanian billionaire, his family and friends and their baby who had just been baptised
The crash of a light aircraft piloted by Romanian billionaire Dan Petrescu near Milan on Sunday has resulted in the deaths of everyone aboard, including a baby who had just been baptised.
Petrescu, his wife and his son were all killed, along with 32-year-old Italian native Filippo Nascimbene, his wife and their baby son Rafael whose baptism on Sunday morning had brought the group together just hours before the crash.
The single engine Pilatus PC-12 had taken off from Milan's Linate airport shortly after 1:00pm local time and was headed for Olbia in the north of the Italian island of Sardinia.
The plane crashed just a few minutes later in San Donato Milanese just southeast of Milan and was already in flames before it crashed according to witnesses.
Petrescu, 68, one of Romania's richest men, headed a major construction firm and owned a string of hypermarkets and malls.
His 65-year-old wife Dorotea Petrescu Balzat, who also had French nationality, and their son Dan Stefano, 30, were killed in the crash.
Meanwhile, Corriere della Sera newspaper reported that Filippo Nascimbene, a 32-year old Italian from Pavia, was killed along with his wife Claire Stephanie Caroline and their baby son Rafael, despite Milanese Prosecutor Tiziana Siciliano initially claiming that only foreigners had died.
The family were sharing the plane as Dan Stefano Petrescu had attended the baptism of baby Rafael - son of his friend Filippo - who was born in January 2020.
Miruna Anca Wanda Lozinschi, a Romanian citizen and mother of Claire Stephanie Caroline was also aboard the plane.
The plane's black box has been recovered and aviation agency ANSV is now conducting an investigation into the crash. Source

A nurse wearing scrubs and body armor was detained after shooting dead a co-worker at a Philadelphia hospital, fleeing in a U-Haul truck and injuring two cops in a gun-fight.
The 55-year-old nurse shot his co-worker on the ninth floor of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital just after midnight on Monday, Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said at a news conference.
The co-worker, a 43-year-old man who was a certified nursing assistant, was later pronounced dead.Cops cornered the shooter in the city's Parkside section after he fled the Hospital in a U-Haul box truck. Armed with multiple weapons, including an AR-15 rifle and a handgun, police said, the the suspect opened fire on the officers, and all four fired back.
Two officers received non-life-threatening injuries during the shootout.
The gunman was shot in the upper body and neck and was taken to Penn Presbyterian in critical condition for treatment, and is expected to survive.
Police said they believe the shooting was targeted. Outlaw said it was unclear whether the nurse was working at the time of the shooting, but police believe he may had access to areas only employees can enter.
The four officers managed to find the suspect at around 1.25am after they were alerted to his location by a passerby, who reported seeing a man waving a large gun near a school about four miles from Jefferson hospital. Officers observed him wearing body armor, and he had several weapons including a rifle and a semi-automatic handgun, Outlaw said.
'We learned that he was wearing body armor, and was carrying multiple weapons. In addition to the long gun which was believed to be an AR-15, he was also carrying some form of a semi-automatic handgun,' Outlaw said, according to ABC 6.
Police said the the suspect fired anywhere from 55 to 80 times in the shootout, Fox29 reported. Of the two officers were struck in the gunfight - one suffered an elbow wound that will require surgery while the other was grazed on the nose. Source
