Motive a mystery as California police hunt for accomplice in festival shooting

Police were searching on Monday for a suspected accomplice of the gunman who killed three people, including a 6-year-old boy, in a mass shooting at a food festival in California. The gunman was shot dead by police officers within minutes of opening fire early on Sunday evening at the three-day Gilroy Garlic Festival, about 30 miles (48 km) southeast of the city of San Jose. Among those killed was a 6-year-old boy, according to news reports. Gilroy Garlic Festival shooting: Gunman 'in military fatigues' told terrified crowds he was 'really angry' as he opened fire with an assault rifle, killing three people including a six-year-old boy, as a manhunt is launched for his 'accomplice' 

A six-year-old boy is among three dead after a mass shooting at a California garlic festival where an unidentified gunman opened fire with an assault rifle, telling the crowd he was 'really angry' as he reloaded his weapon before being shot dead by police.  Stephen Romero was killed when a man described by witnesses as white, aged between 20 and 35 and wearing military fatigues, opened fire on the final day of the Gilroy Garlic Festival, around 30 miles south of San Jose, with a semi-automatic assault rifle around 6pm local time Sunday.  The gunman, who is yet to be identified, was shot dead by police.   Authorities believe he gained access to the festival, which was protected with metal detectors, by using bolt cutters to get through a fence.   They believe he had an accomplice and police are still looking for that person.   According to witnesses, when asked why he wanted to was shooting, the gunman answered 'because I'm really angry'.   Others have told how he was silent as he marched through the crowds.   'He didn't say anything, nothing. He did not even look from side to side. The chilling descriptions came to light this week as part civil action filed by 33 defendants whose loved ones' bodies were donated to the facility. Plaintiffs state that they were misled by the company who led them to believe that the bodies would be used for disease research or organ donation. The reality was a lot more horrifying and owner Stephen Gore, 52, was found guilty of operating an illegal business in 2015 after it was discovered that he had been been selling body parts. More than 1,755 human body parts were found at the facility, which took 142 body bags to move and weighed 10 tons, according to Reuters. In a declaration for the new lawsuit, former FBI special agent Mark Cwynar described 'various unsettling scenes' at the site in Phoenix, AZ Central reported. Cwynar told of a small woman's head sewn onto a large male torso that was hanging from the wall in a 'Frankenstein manner' according to the New York Post.  A discarded sleeping bag, scraps of pork and orange peels and a marooned aluminum boat formed a trail of evidence that led authorities to the bodies of two teenage fugitives in northern Canada, but details about their final days on the lam remain unclear.   Two male bodies believed to belong to Bryer Schmegelsky, 18, and Kam McLeod, 19, were found in swampy, dense brush less than a mile from the Nelson River near Gillam, Manitoba, on Wednesday morning.    Half-eaten pork chops, a can of sardines and orange peels, remnants of what may have been the suspects' final meal, were found by the burnt-out car they had driven across three Canadian provinces with police hot on their heels.   It appears that Schmegelsky and McLeod set fire to the car before heading through the thick, insect-infested swamp toward the river.  Source

Sydney woman refused bail after mother's death

A 25-year-old woman will remain behind bars following allegations she decapitated her mother in their western Sydney home. Jessica Camilleri was charged with murder after her mother Rita, 57, was found dead in their home in St Clair on Saturday night. The matter was briefly mentioned in Penrith Local Court on Monday after she was assessed in hospital overnight. Ms Camilleri did not apply for bail and it was formally refused. The matter will next be heard at the same court on August 9 when an application will be made for a forensic procedure to be carried out. It will then be brought back to the same court on September 20 for mention. Detective Superintendent Brett McFadden on Sunday alleged the mother and daughter had been arguing before the dispute turned violent, with neighbours raising the alarm. He said a number of knives were used in the "horrific" attack on the 57-year- old. Ms Camilleri, who faced Parramatta Bail Court via video link on Sunday, said she suffered from a number of conditions including border autism, bipolar disorder and anxiety. She told the court she couldn't move her fingers properly after "the incident" and hadn't been able to wash herself properly in the shower to get all the blood off. Source

The man suspected of burning down an animation studio in Kyoto, Japan, was avenging the theft of his novel, it has been reported. Japanese police have named Shinji Aoba, 41, as the suspect in Japan's worst mass killing for two decades, claiming that he entered the premises of the Kyoto Animation Studio with a trolley and at least one bucket of petrol. He is alleged to have shouted "die" when he arrived at the studio, which is better known as KyoAni. He later admitted to police when he was detained, "I did it," the news agency Kyodo reported. Aoba had a mental illness and had previously done time for theft. It is believed that he bought 20 liter gasoline cans at a hardware store and prepared the petrol in a park nearby, the Japanese broadcaster NHK reported. Source

Thirty-six others were injured, some of them critically. The suspect was hurt and taken to a hospital. Police identified him only a 41-year-old man who was not a company employee. They gave no immediate details on the motive. Source

Working conditions are grim. Animators often fall asleep at their desks. Henry Thurlow, an American animator living and working in Japan, told BuzzFeed News he has been hospitalized multiple times due to illness brought on by exhaustion.

One studio, Madhouse, was recently accused of violating labor code: Employees were working nearly 400 hours per month and went 37 consecutive days without a single day off. A male animator’s 2014 suicide was classified as a work-related incident after investigators found he had worked more than 600 hours in the month leading up to his death.

Part of the reason studios use freelancers is so they don’t need to worry about the labor code. Since freelancers are independent contractors, companies can enforce grueling deadlines while saving money by not providing benefits.

“The problem with anime is that it just takes way too long to make,” Zakoani, an animator at Studio Yuraki and Douga Kobo, said. “It’s extremely meticulous. One cut — one scene — would have three to four animators working on it. I make the rough drawings, and then two other people would check it, a more senior animator and the director. Then it gets sent back to me and I clean it up. Then it gets sent to another person, the in-betweener, and they make the final drawings.”

According to the Japanese Animation Creators Association, an animator in Japan earns on average ¥1.1 million (~$10,000) per year in their 20s, ¥2.1 million (~$19,000) in their 30s, and a livable but still meager ¥3.5 million (~$31,000) in their 40s and 50s. The poverty line is Japan is ¥2.2 million.

Animators make ends meet any way they can. Terumi Nishii, a freelance animator and game designer, earns most of her income from video game animation because she has to take care of her parents. On an animator’s salary, she would have little chance of feeding herself. Source
