Saudi Arabia lashes out at Iran over claim of involvement in nuclear chief's killing
The Saudi minister of state lambasted his Iranian counterpart on Tuesday over allegations that Riyadh had a role in the assassination of Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, a key architect of the Iranian nuclear weapons program.
On Monday, Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammed Javad Zarif took to Instagram to claim that Friday's assassination was part of a discussion at a trilateral meeting between US State Secretary Mike Pompeo, Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
"Pompeo’s hurried trips to the region, the trilateral meeting in Saudi Arabia and Netanyahu’s statements all point to this conspiracy," Zarif claimed on his Instagram page.
The Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Aljubeir took to Twitter to reject these accusations and call Iran out over its own actions abroad. Saying Zarif was "desperate" to blame all of Iran's plights on Riyadh, Aljubeir wondered: "Will he blame us for the next earthquake or flood?"
"It is not the policy of Saudi Arabia to engage in assassinations; unlike Iran, which has done so since the Khomeini Revolution in 1979," he added.
Mohsen Fakhrizadeh was killed Friday near Tehran, with Iran blaming Israel and domestic opposition group known as the People's Mujahideen of Iran for the hit.
Media reports paint a conflicting picture of his assassination, with Iran claiming that the assailants used a remote-controlled firearm. Source
